Pre-Clinical \ Laboratory Research - GCP
GCP (Genistein Combined Polysaccharide; Amino Up Chemical Company, Sapporo, Japan)
GCP is a soy and Reishi mushroom fermented functional food product that is enriched for biologically active aglycone isoflavones (genistein, daidzein and glycitein). In nature, isoflavones are found in a glycosylated form which refers to the attachment of a sugar group to the molecule. However, the sugar group is removed during fermentation which results in the chemical form known as the aglycone version of the molecule and is the form that can be readily absorbed into the body. We have previously shown that GCP suppresses prostate cancer cells in both cell culture and in vivo tumor model systems, and this work was published in an American Association for Cancer Research journal, Clinical Cancer Research. (CCR paper – GCP). We have also observed that cells derived from several bladder tumors are also susceptible to growth suppression and cell death following exposure to this preparation, and we expect to publish these studies soon.
During the conduct of the prostate and bladder cancer studies with GCP, we have identified a cellular pathway that may be critical for the ability of this preparation to kill the cancer cells and suppress in vivo tumor growth. Some tumor systems have mutations in this pathway and, it is our hypothesis that these tumors may be less responsive to the effects of GCP. We are currently pursuing this hypothesis and believe that it might lead to the identification of the first natural product preparation which could be recommended to cancer patients based upon the genetic makeup of their tumors.
