Prostabel® (Natural Source International Ltd., New York, NY)
We are studying a product created by Natural Source International Ltd. which is a mixture of plant-derived extracts named Prostabel. The extracts present in Prostabel were prepared from the bark of the Amazonian tree, Pao pereira, and the root bark of the sub-Saharan plant, Rauwolfia vomitoria. Historically, both plants have been used medicinally by indigenous peoples. Work conducted by the late scientist, Mirko Beljanski identified the extracts to have anti-cancer activities against tumor cells isolated from a variety of cancers. We have been studying the potential of these extracts to suppress prostate cancer cells in both cell culture and in vivo models. Our studies thus far indicate that both the Rauwolfia and Pao extracts suppress prostate tumor cell growth in culture and in vivo, but appear to accomplish this effect through different mechanisms. We are continuing to probe the mechanisms of action of these extracts, and we have recently published a paper detailing our recent findings regarding the Rauwolfia extract in the peer-reviewed journal, International Journal of Oncology [29(5):1065-1073, 2006]. We expect to publish our data from the Pao studies within the near future.
